Introducing Downsman Bowler

23 Oct 2026

A New Breed of Bowler Joins Downsman!
We are delighted that "Downsman Bowler" (a greyhound belonging to our very own Dennis Hodgkins) has apparently decided that the club could benefit from a little extra speed on the green, and so has accepted the Committee's invitation to become an Honorary Member.
We are assured that our new recruit has several outstanding qualifications. A natural ability to cover ground quickly, an impressive turn of speed, and a keen eye for anything moving, are all promising attributes for an aspiring bowler. Whether these will translate into a talent for drawing shots or delivering a decisive wood remains to be seen. Despite the prestigious title of Honorary Member, Downsman Bowler will be subject, of course, to the usual rules, regulations and a strict understanding that the bowling green remains strictly out of bounds to dogs!
Our new member's duties will be strictly limited to off-green activities. No paws on the playing surface, no chasing woods, no peeing or pooing and absolutely no running the length of the green in pursuit of the jack — however tempting the opportunity! And, perhaps most importantly, he must be able to resist the temptation to retrieve a bowl when it strays into the ditch !
We look forward to welcoming our newest recruit to the club and hope he enjoys his membership. Who knows? With a little practice, he might even teach some of us a thing or two about getting down the green in a hurry! Welcome to Downsman — but please leave the bowling to the bowlers! ???
